1)Re-read Chapter 3, pages 65 to 73.  Read selections from Chapter 5: An Approach to Reading and Writing, pages 113-115; and  Reading to Interpret a Text, pages 119-123. Use the exercises in the Chapter 5 sections to think about reading and interpretation. You do not have to submit responses in writing for this assignment.

2)Apply what you have learned about inference and interpretation to the attached Hemmingway reading and answer the questions below. This assignment should be 375 words or 1.5 pages double-spaced.

Hills like White Elephants.

This story by Hemmingway is a great exercise in inferring meaning and interpreting a text where little is stated openly. Using the process of observing details, connecting details and making inferences and try to answer the following questions.

a) What are the two characters talking about?

b) How would you characterize their relationship?

c) Now that you have answered these two questions, give one or two examples of how you came to your interpretation of the story. Remember to use the three steps discussed in Diyanni to show how you came to you interpretation:
