Receptions

An indication of the (continued) relevance of Goethes approach to the story of Faust is the history of receptions and adaptations that his play has inspired. You goal in this unit is to explore versions that interest you both individually and as a team. You might want to consider:
    musical and operatic versions (from the 19th century);
    film versions (esp. by Murnau in the 1920s) and the filming of Grndgens theatrical version in the 1950s
    associations with National Socialismboth the NS exploitation of the Faustian as the German character trait and critiques (Heinrich and Thomas Mann)
    Bulgakovs Russian novel
    Versions performed in non-European contexts (a beginning could be the book by David G. John, Bennewitz, Goethe, ‘Faust’: German and Intercultural Stagings)
