Global Circulation of Asian Popular Culture Brief description : Choose one specific Asian popular cultural product (e.g. blockbuster or horror films, TVdrama, pop songs) and critically analysethe characteristics, cultural specificity, andlocal and global significance of the product and how and why it has changed whentransplanted into other cultures. Your essay should include one or more examples of thespecific popular cultural product which were not used in the lectures. It should notreproduce material dealt with in the PPTpresentation. You may link the essay and your literature review, but should be careful not to reproduce the same material. Do NOT write about Japanese manga or anime, as these are comprehensively dealt with in other units. Length of the essay: 3000 words. Your essay should: be original; be well argued, articulate, well structured, coherent; be typed (Times New Roman, 12-pt font, A4, 1.5-spaced, 2 cm margins); use an approved referencing style, (e.g. MLA, Chicago, Harvard, APA); be fully referenced with seven or more relevant academic references (books, book chapters or journal articles). (You may include graphics and website materials, but they will not be counted as academic references.); and minimize description of the culture and cultural products “ analyse! In the iLearn folder, you will find assessment criteria which clearly explain what will beassessed, and how it will be assessed. Please use these criteria for self-evaluation duringthe research and writing process. Several students have asked about what needs to be emphasized in the final essay. The following explanations should help: 1. You are asked to select œone specific Asian popular cultural product (e.g. blockbuster or horror films, TV drama, pop songs). This must be an Asian product, not something originating in the West and exported to Asia (thus you could write about sushi but not Kentucky Fried Chicken) 2. œCritically analyse the characteristics and cultural specificity of the product. This stage forms the basis for the main purpose of the essay, which is: 3. œcriticallyanalyse the global significance of the product and how and why it has changed when transplanted into other cultures. Change can involve physical or material change (as in remakes of a film or changed ingredients in a food style) or changes in significance when the product is interpreted from the perspective of another culture (on a simple level, aspects of cultural specificity that are ˜invisible’ to ˜home culture’ consumers can become highly visible, and perhaps inappropriately so, to consumers from cultures in which the product circulates).
