European Migration and Social Reform.

Use only the sources that will be provided by me. Please read information carefully. Your task in this assignment is to make and support a single assertion about European immigration before 1920. Your primary sources should be the charts and tables handed out in class, Addams, Riis and any of the material on the Urban Experience web site. (The charts The assertion should be simple, straightforward and clear and should be easily illustrated with data and supported with other primary documents. For example, you might assert that social reformers were drawn into the problems of immigration because immigrants were overwhelmingly concentrated in poor, crowded neighborhoods. Census data showing the rise of the foreign born in cities and shifts in immigration from rural to urban areas would support this assertion. You might also use Addams income maps to illustrate the concentration of poverty on the west side of Chicago. You might assert that the shifting patterns of immigration alarmed Americans because of the overall increase in the number of immigrants but also a change in the sending nations from Europe: Americas felt overwhelmed by the number of immigrants coming to the US at the turn of the century. They also reacted to the fact that immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe were coming in larger numbers than those from Northern Europe. This marked a significant shift in European migration in the 19th century.
