Corporate Culture Case Study

ASSIGNMENT 1 Corporate Culture Case Study Understanding and assessing your organization?s culture can mean the difference between success and failure within that organization. The skills and abilities gained in these assignments can give you an advantage; not understanding the culture is so costly, both in terms of lost opportunities and possible heartache. CULTURE AUDIT You are to conduct an analysis of an organization. Written documentation must include a brief history of the organization, organizational demographics, product or service, and summary and analysis of findings. Use the following format: I. Introduction: Organizational history, demographics, product/service, and any additional background information that you feel important to an understanding of the culture. II. Analysis: The questions that are listed below must be included in your paper. III. Conclusions: Summarize your findings and overall impressions of the organization within this section. IV. Bibliography: Include a listing of any resources that were utilized during your analysis. The questions below must be included within the Analysis section of your project. In addition to your answers to each of the questions, provide examples and situations that illustrate your answers. Include the question itself with each of your explanations. I. Introduction II. Analysis Culture 1. What does the organization stand for? (The organization?s highest value, its mission, its ideology) 2. What does it take to be highly successful in this organization? What kind of person is most respected? What is considered heroic? 3. What is viewed as serious punishment in this organization? What kinds of mistakes are not forgiven? 4. What company folklore, rituals, symbols, and ceremonies best reveal the essential character of the organization? 5. Make believe this organization is a person. How would you describe this person? 6. What are the main rules that everyone has to follow in this organization? Organizational Effectiveness and Satisfaction 7. What is the one thing the organization doesn?t do as well as it should? 8. Where is this organization headed? (The likely long-term outcomes) 9. What is the employee turnover in the organization relative to other comparable organizations? Status of the Individual in the Organization 10. On which key groups or individuals, in addition to one?s manager, would you be most dependent to get the job done successfully? 11. What are the biggest hurdles that have to be overcome to do the job well? 12. What important sources of support are potentially available for getting the job done? (Technical, logistical, interpersonal, and political factors) 13. Is there a possibility of becoming stereotyped in the organization? What is the status and progression of those who are similarly stereotyped? (Age, race, gender, ethnic heritage, educational background and their effects on stereotypes, status, and effectiveness) 14. How readily are new employees accepted into the culture? 15. What do you think are the most important forces in the external environment creating uncertainty for your organization today? Do the forces you identified typically arise in the task environment or the general environment?* III. Summary IV. Bibliography ? These questions were adapted from those suggested by Sathe (1985, 100-106).
