Conduct one informational interview with a person who is either currently an expatriate worker or has previously worked abroad on an expatriate work assignment. Assignment 3: Interview with an Expatriate Learning Objectives Assessed: Conduct one informational interview with a person who is either currently an expatriate worker or has previously worked abroad on an expatriate work assignment. Write a 2-3 pages report about what you have learned about the challenges that the expatriate faced while working in a country different from their own. You may keep the identity of the expatriate anonymous if they wish so. Include a short section in your report that compares the two countries along the cultural dimensions provided by the GlobeSmart Assesment Profile. Try preparing this before the interview so that you can ask the expatriate worker where they stand and if they had any difficulties based on differences in these dimensions. Make sure that you include the following areas in your report: Is the person that you interviewed currently working in an expatriate assignment? Or does he or she know enough about it to talk to you about it? Why did you choose the person that you interviewed? What cross-cultural issues did the expatriate worker face when they first moved for their overseas assignment? How did they manage to deal with those issues? Were they provided any help by the organization that they were working for? If they are still working in the expatriate work assignment, what issues are they currently facing? Did it become easier for them to adjust with time? Did they display any of the characteristics of Adjusting and Over-adjusting highlighted by the Pendulum Phenomenon? How important are relationships in the job that they are/were doing? What recommendations or advice can they give you for being successful if you were in their place? Are there any skills that can make your experience easier? What are the main insights that you gained from the interview? What is your plan for developing the cross-cultural skills necessary to be effective in an overseas job assignment?
