The prompt:
Please write your paper on the theme “How the West Was Won”– that is, the near-mythic status of the “Old West” for much of the US (wagon trains, cowboys and Indians, Manifest Destiny, Daniel Boone, ’49ers, the “Western” genre, “frontier spirit”, John Wayne, etc etc). Include in this a discussion viewpoints from a First Nations perspective: how would a Native American likely view such material? In what way does such material continue to influence how people view Native Americans today?
