Leadership and Management

Leadership and Management

Two topics of “Leadership and Multiculturalism” and “Leadership and Culture” will be delivered in four full days. “Gender and Development” is also related to this topic.
Students will be expected to structure the writing of the report under the following three headings:
• Section 1: Leadership.

In this section students should write a short overview and discussion of what they have learnt about leadership, management and team working. Their discussion should focus on three central questions:

• What do ‘leadership’ and ‘management’ mean? – What are their differences?

• What sort of a leader they are?

• What sort of a leader could they become or would wish to become?

To answer these questions, students should give some thought to the general theory and discussions they have had in the classes, as well as their experience of the practical tasks. This section can be ‘academic’ or it can be personal – one possibility is that students could write it as a personal reflection on what they have learnt about themselves as leaders, and how they would like to explore the ideas and issues raised in the programme further for themselves. However, students are also encouraged to reflect on questions such as ‘what is a good leader/manager?’, ‘how does someone learn to become a leader?’, ‘what are the main challenges of leadership?’, or perhaps any other questions they may wish to explore on this topic.
• Section 2: Short reflections: most interesting and most challenging issues

This will include all the classes/tutorials of the week, although students may also adopt briefly some elements of prior themes in their introductions. However, they need to be careful to not to include any phrases or sentences that they have already used for prior reports.

General Criteria
Word limits
• Minimum and maximum word limits have been given for each report.
• If the report is less than the minimum word limit, you will lose 5 marks for every 100 words below the limit;
• If you exceed the maximum word limit, you will lose 5 marks for every 100 extra words, which will have a negative effect on your grade.

Proportion of marking for different sections of the reports
Reports are divided into different sections, with marks allocated for each as follows:
• Report has two sections:
o Section 1: Topic question (60% of marks are allocated to this section)
o Section 2: Short reflections: most interesting and most challenging issues (40% of marks are allocated to this section)
