Competency Standard 4: Participates in ongoing professional development of self and others (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2008) |
Statement of justification
Evidence from my nursing unit manager’s (NUM) report verifies my ability to contribute to the professional development requirements of self and others. As a Nurse Educator at a South Western Sydney hospital, I identified the competency requirements of nursing staff and conducted competency assessments incorporating the evaluation of staff performance. I conducted a two hour training program for nursing staff. The purpose of the session was to expand staff knowledge about the FRAT policy and equip them with the practical skills to apply the tool and document information accurately. Videos, simulations and focused talks were resources employed to optimise trainees’ clinical competence. At the end of the session, I assessed a staff member’s competence in applying the FRAT in a simulated environment by means of direct observation. Cantillon and Wood (2010), reveal that direct observation is a valuable form of assessment, often employed to assess application of knowledge and skills across a range of clinical areas. It is the most suitable method to measure practical, on the job skills. In accordance with this, I designed a checklist of criteria that centred around the utilisation of the FRAT. The staff member assessed scored ‘meets expectations’ or ‘above expectations’ for most of the grading criteria demonstrating the effectiveness of the training program I had coordinated. In addition, feedback from the staff member endorsed my ability to enable healthcare workers achieve productive learning outcomes and implement safe nursing practices.
