Summary:
In an analytical report, you must carefully examine a topic or an issue to fully understand it. For this assignment you will explore
the Underground Railroad, a phenomenon that played an important role in American history. Writers often analyze the causes, reasons, effects, and factors related to what they are writing about. For this essay you might look at the causes of the existence of the network, the factors that contributed to its emergence and kept it going for a long time, the aspects of its operation, and the effects it had on the society. You will use the texts provided by your instructor in class and do some research in the library, you will rely on these sources to learn about and to describe the Underground Railroad. You will have to cite all your sources correctly and incorporate them into your writing.

Prewriting:
Before you write, you will need to do some extensive reading since it is a topic you are not familiar with. Remember to take notes in class and keep all the worksheets and handouts you receive. Make sure you save all your work on a disk or a flash drive so that you can always retrieve it. When you are ready, try to formulate your opinion about the Underground Railroad, then think of three or four main points to support it. Think of a logical way to organize your main points and make an informal outline.

Putting it Together:
Start with a background paragraph that will prepare your reader to understand your further explanations.
Formulate a strongthesis statement
(consult Keys pp. 18-20).
Make sure it is clear, concise, and very specific.

Remember that each paragraph in the body should cover only one main point. This will make it easy for your readers to understand you and will make your essay sound well-organized. Do not forget that each paragraph must be logically connected to the thesis statement in the introduction. Remember to integrate the sources you use. Your essay should not consist of quotes, summaries, and paraphrases. It should be YOUR writing with sources used to exemplify, support, and develop YOUR ideas.

Wrap up with a conclusion
(see Keys pp. 35-36 and the handout on V-space ‘Resources’ for advice on writing a good conclusion).
You may remind the readers of your main argument, revisit your main points,and/or reflect on the issues you discussed, but make sure not to repeatthe exact wording you already used in the introduction and the body of the paper. You should also avoid starting a completely new point in the conclusion.
