The Potter & Jeremiah

The goal of this assignment is to demonstrate a hermeneutic that develops an application of the biblical text by integrating concepts from biblical culture.

In preparation for this assignment read Jeremiah 18:1-12 & 19:1-15 and the section on pottery in King & Stager, Life in Biblical Israel, pages 133-146. You may find additional help from a Bible commentary on Jeremiah for this assignment.

Describe the physical process of pottery making that the prophet Jeremiah was observing during the time of ancient Israel.
What would cause a vessel be spoiled in the hand of the potter (18:4)?
How can this concept (spoiling, damaging) be related to Israel during the time of Jeremiah (ca. 6th century BC)?
How should the phrase as it pleased the potter to make be understood in the context of Jeremiah’s message?
Briefly develop 1 clear spiritual application from your study of Jeremiahs encounter with the Lord and his observation of the potter in Jeremiah 18:1-12.
