Ch.1 Q&A

The textbook is: Burton, David M. The history of mathematics. Edition: 7th ed. Publisher: McGraw-Hill. 2011.
[ISBN: 9780073383156].

Read Chapter 1 and answer the following questions  (when you read, you may skip most of the math examples which will be explained in the videos posted under MP1, and focus on the history part). Page numbers are indicated to help you locate the answers.

1. (2pts) Describe different methods of primitive counting (must include tally sticks and quibus, how counting started; pages 1-6). Minimum 120 words. 

2. (1.5pts) Describe the Mayan number system (must include the symbols used, the base, and whether it is a positional system; pages 7-8). Minimum 90 words.

3. (1.5pts) Describe the Egyptian number system (must include the symbols used, the base, whether it is a positional system and why the Egyptians had a fully developed number system; pages 11-13 and 15-16). Minimum 90 words.

4. (1.5pts) Describe the Greek number system (pages 16-18). Minimum 90 words.

5. (2pts) Describe the Babylonian number system (must indicate the symbols used, the base, and whether it is a positional system; pages 23-26). Minimum 120 words.

6. (1.5pts) Describe different writing materials in various civilizations (must include Egyptian, Babylonian and Chinese). Minimum 90 words.

Grading Rubrics:

(1). lose a half point for every two grammar or spelling mistakes.
(2). lose one point each day past the due day for any late submission.
(3). lose a half point for each 20 words less than the minimum.

(4). lose a half point for any key item that is not covered in your answer.
