Paper Instructions
This 4-8 (not including cover page and reference page) page paper asks you to use course concepts to analyze how a social problem was framed by a generation, population, or group of people. Unlike your last paper, this paper must be in APA format with a full references list (on the last page of your paper). This references list should not have internet links nor should it use sources which are not academic journals in the field of sociology. I also expect APA style in-text citations. For information, see the citation it includes both in-text and reference page citations (as a template).
You must cite at least 6 scholarly articles from socINDEX using the library source on the School website. I will do a demonstration for how you find these articles in class on Tuesday (however, I will not spend the entire class period doing so). All 6 scholarly articles should be from socINDEX (a database on the library website). If you have any questions about this, either see me in my office hours, ask other students in the class who regularly come to class or go to the library on campus to ask a librarian. All 6 articles should help you make an argument in your paper. This means you should be able to back up a claim that you make throughout your paper about a social problem and how it has been framed (and by whom). This paper will be much more citation and “research” heavy. You might read about how to write an effective literature review online- this is essentially what I am asking you to write, but with an argument with an introduction (of the social problem and who thinks it’s a problem and why), a literature review section (what these 6 articles add to my argument/discussion, and a conclusion wrapping up how all of this fits together and what you think about the claim being made based on the evidence (which you should have 6 articles of).
Your paper must be 4-8 pages to get full credit (not including your cover page or references page) and it should use course content in some way- this will be more or less (depending on how closely related your topic is to social problems we discussed in class. You should, however, be sure to use your textbook as a source (not counted in the 6, but a 7th source). This is your minimum amount of sources- you can have more if you choose, but I would imagine this making it difficult to stay within the 8 page limit! You do not need an abstract, but if you really want one, you may have one. This, however, does not count as a page either. It is very hard to write a solid paper in less than 4 pages.
We will not spend an entire class period “brainstorming,: for this paper, but you should come to my office if you have any questions about citations. I encourage you to use citationmachine.net and easybib if you so desire to help you with your references (this tends to save a lot of time and most scholars use them). Also, do not email me with drafts of your paper for proofreading for this second paper. As much as I want to read each draft, this class size makes it difficult to proofread papers. Do email me questions about content, topics, and ideas- or general clarification questions. I would be happy to help you and hear about your ideas. While I will not proofread your papers or help with citations over email, I do encourage you to ask questions about these issues in class that the entire class can benefit from and come to my office hours if you want me to look at your paper (briefly) and give you help with citations and Internet sources.
