combating terrorism abroad
Should the US be involved in combating terrorism abroad? Should we focus solely on terrorism happening in the United States?
Among the many controversies facing the United States today terrorism seems to be the talk of the town. One of the largest disputes about terrorism is over whether or not the US should be fighting terrorism abroad or if efforts should be solely focused on internal domestic terrorism. Some say that focusing on altruism is the route to go and that turning the blind eye out of fear or selfishness is not the right thing to do. Others believe that efforts abroad do more harm than good and that the US is not safe enough domestically to be worrying about other countries and their terrorism problems. The real question is, does the United States continue to be the big brother and come to everyone’s aid or does the United States protect the homeland and look out for #1 (United States)? If the US cannot protect against domestic attacks and problems then how can they protect someone else? Essentially the question comes down to one logical answer, If I cannot protect my self, there is no way I can protect someone else.
The most present domestic terrorist attack occurred on April 15th, 2013 and will be known forever as the Boston marathon bombing. Two brothers, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev planted home made bombs, stored in their backpacks, near the finish line of the annual Boston marathon race, killing three and wounding 260 other people; some spectators and some people who were actually running in the race. According to the New York Times The F.B.I. has concluded that there was little its agents could have done to prevent the Boston Marathon bombings, according to law enforcement officials, rejecting criticism that it could have better monitored one of the suspects before the attack. The sad truth is that Russia’s government had requested for the United States CIA to add the older brother Tamerlan to the terrorist database, after they had suspected him of being a follower of the radical Islam group. Suspected terrorist need to be monitored better, the US has many resources, yet all of the resources are used overseas fighting to better or protect other countries. According to CNN news, 91 soldiers died in Afghanistan from the months of January to September in the year of 2013. That is 91 United States citizens that died in efforts to protect non-UScitizens’ lives and non-US assets. Imagine if those 91 soldiers were in uniform and armed at the Boston Marathon bombing, preventing and protecting their own country on their own soil, then maybe, just maybe this whole mess would have never happened.
One of the most monumental terrorist groups to ever be domestically operating in the United States is a gang named The Crips. You may have heard of them but never knew that the FBI actually considers them a terrorist organization. This group has been active since the 1970’s and now has over 30,000 members, about the size of a small army who use acts of violence as power. According to Jesa Reyes They hold no definite belief system and no agenda; they act only out of need and impulse, with no regard for anyone else.Murder is commonly used to scare both the public and rival gangs. The Crips are also to blame for the widespread use of PCP, Crack Cocaine, and amphetamines in the United States, as they are one of the top distributors in the world. The FBI acknowledges the Crips as ruthless and unpredictable, and their deadly ways continue over 40 years after their creation. So for 40 years this terrorist organization has wreaked havoc on anyone who gets in their way, opposes their views, people who have any asset that they can steal and any innocent bystander who is in the wrong place at the wrong time around this gang. If the United States were to devote more time, money and man power being used in foreign land, the crimes would decrease and the punishments for these crimes would increase. A terrorist organization could be slowly halted until there were no more blue flags waving and no more red blood in the streets.
According to the FBI by definition, Domestic terrorism involves acts dangerous to human life that violate federal or state law;Appear intende
