SMT literature on the Middle EastEssay Question:
In their introduction to the book Social Movements, Mobilization, and Contestation in the Middle East and North Africa, Joel Beinin and Frédéric Vairel review and critique the existing literature on social movement theory (SMT) in general, and the SMT literature on the Middle East in particular. They argue that the essays in the volume go beyond the classic social movement theory in a number of ways.
Write an essay exploring the following question:
What is Beinin and Vairel’s critique of the existing SMT literature (both general SMT literature and SMT literature on the Middle East)? What are their main arguments? How are they (and the authors of the chapters in the volume) trying to advance SMT? Do they in fact advance SMT? Explain using examples from the chapters by Marie Duboc and Zeynep Gülru Göker.
