How is the Individual’s identity constructed and negotiated through the use of the English Language in Literacy practices, and the work setting?
This question focuses on the construction and negotiation of the individual’s identity through the use of the English Language.
The first part of the question relates to the construction and negotiation of identity in literacy practices. This includes the ways in which people interact with texts and the meanings these hold for them.
You should explain that literacy practices are tied up with individual identity, personal relationship and community membership. You could also discuss the kinds of text and the different reading and writing activities which reflect the different literacy domains. The role of individuals taking on the identity and roles of literacy mediators could also be explored.
The second part of the question relates to the construction and negotiation of identity in work setting.
You should discuss how English is used among co-workers as well as how English is used between experts and the public. You could also discuss the English associated with different worlds of work and profession as well as how English is used in interactions to determine the identity of ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders’ in a field.
