This article discusses the emerging issues faced by the Reentry Industry in America.  It provides a variety of perspectives on the current criminal justice system.  It also explores the unintended consequences or impacts of enforced therapy in the American prison system that was promoted by the Quakers of the 18th century. In essence, it highlights the prison reentry industry’s overarching influence in the lives of ex-convicts making them prone to living on parole their entire lifetime.

Its Importance to Our Society

Currently, it is imperative to take a critical look at the challenges faced by the incarcerated and reentry communities. There has been a growing tendency of allocating more attention and resources to the US prison system compared to the country’s learning institutions especially for racial minorities. Fundamentally, it is important for society to envisage alternatives to imprisonment.

A large percentage of people incarcerated people in America have committed non-violent crimes, most of them especially African Americans are convicted of possession or use of drug charges. Even though the American crime rate is decreasing, the number of people incarcerated is still growing at an alarming rate.

 

Agree or Disagree with the Article

I agree with most arguments brought forward in this article, it is correct as it emphasizes that punishment in the form of incarceration is not the best solution or deterrent to crime. There is a need to tackle the root causes of crime such as poverty, broken families, racism, insecurity, shame and disrespect rather than only focusing on punishment through the broken Prison Reentry Industry.

There is a need for the establishment of Truth and Reconciliation Mechanisms that can assist in the elimination of fear and guilt within the increasingly dysfunctional American way of life and its criminal justice system. Any attempts to end the high mass incarcerations without tackling this apparent root causes are futile.

As from a careful study of this article on crime, it is imperative that America has to stop tormenting and hurting its prisoners as it is doing right now. One has to agree that it is important for people not remaining passive to the government’s authority as it continues to enforce this broken prison system imposed on them in the form of punishment of crime. It’s almost like the system is being used to instill some sinister values making it easier to control the population through fear of this brutal criminal justice system. Consequently, it is important to ensure that the system doe doesn’t continue to be profitable for corporate America but cruel to citizens.

The Re-entry Industry is currently a lens that is used to view the many problems associated with the process of a convict’s release from prison to one’s their re-entry into the society at large. Given that there are a high number of prisoners being released with negligible to no support services from their communities, academicians, criminal justice
