To become a great servant leader, some people are meant to be followers all of their lives, not really wanting to take on leadership roles. When I was promoted to my first leadership role, I had no experience on being a leader I just winged it basically, I had four to five employee’s under me, and had encountered many obstacles, the worse one was having one of my employee’s terminated, I look back on the experience a lot, thinking how could I have handled the situation better? The place that I had worked for was not behind their employee’s at all, not feeling like family such as the Southwest Airlines treats their employee’s. I am in a leadership role in my current job and have been to various Leadership trainings, I work for a non-profit agency and I feel like we all have a great relationship and get a lot of respect from my co-workers and directors. I always try to treat people as I would like to be treated, we are a Christian based organization, so it is important that we attend bible study at least once a week., when we encounter people we put aside everything and focus on them, making them feel important, even at times when they are so down and out. The employee’s I supervise I try to empower them as much as I can, continually asking them for their input on some of the decisions that I have to make. Applying Servant Leadership to GCU would be the way you treat your classmates, being honest and applying yourself to your courses, do these things and you will succeed.Christensen wrote “Chose the right Yardstick”, when he was diagnosed with cancer, his life was turned around. (Christensen C.M (2010) Part of the reason I had chosen to go back to school, is because we don’t know when we could suddenly leave this earth, when my son was diagnosed with cancer also, and I made the choice to go back to college, because I want to experience everything life has to offer, I am changing my career to the health care field because this is a field I believe I have a passion for, and can make a difference and feel like I can have some balance in life, working in the Human Services field now I am not feeling any balance, basically people with Mental Health seem to take a lot of time and patience and I find myself taking my work home with me. You have to enjoy your career. Finding a balance in work, home, and your spiritual lives seems so hard at times, praying has to be the start of your day or your day could spiral out of control, even some days having to pray about the decisions that I have to make, because if I don’t the ending usually don’t turn out well. When I was raising my four kids on my own, I was continually working with no time to really focus on them, but they turned out really well, because they had grown up watching me struggle and didn’t want to struggle with their kids so they work hard and balance their lives out, with spending quality time with their kids.
