Gender Issues in Culture and Education
Gender issues have been a part of so many discussions in recent times, and social foundation and education have created a greater impact on gender identity. In the video titled Killing us Softly 4, Jean Kibourne analyzes how female bodies have been used as objects or tools in advertisement, an issue that developed a poor perception about beauty (Kendra 2006). In the video, she shows her audience the images she has collected, dating as far as from 1960s, which were inspired by the fact that she was a model and a member of the women’s movement. On the other hand, some critical theories have shown how dominant structural powers have led to unjust social and education culture (Foulkes 2002). For instance, in dance pedagogy, the use of literature began to show ways in which social views on gender has produced unjust views on social-cultural outcomes.
Kibourne uses a mixture of humor and criticism in her guide. Although the ads provide varied products, they have similar ways of selling the product by using the female beauty and sexuality, and this shows how the American culture viewed its women (Uncg, 2013). These kinds of advertisements have reduced the perception of real women, and she believes that the women’s image has become even worse in advertisement despite the presence of the women’s movements.
On the other hand the article shows the importance of children and adults to understand the social just and that and education is the key to creating the gender balance and therefore being able to undestand the children’s development in references to family and their community is important for teaching. In this case teachers need to master both content of the subject they are teaching and the knowledge of the curriculum (Lasley 2000).
These advertisements tell women that their looks are the important aspects of an ideal woman when actually the images have been created using cosmetics and computer modifications. The series includes advertisements that have been seen in the past few years where adverts have been photo shopped. For example, a model’s pubic hair is shaped as Gucci Logo by waxing it. The film also targets the advertisement on the sexualization of younger girl such as the advertisement on bras which are worn by seven year olds. Kibourne believes that portraying women as objects implies increased sexual violence towards them. In addition, some parts of the women are more focused on than others, especially the breasts; this led to increasing the number of cosmetic surgeries done in recent years (Martin, 2007). The images shown in the film by Jean Kibourne affects the younger generation who are yet to understand the media literature (Kendra, 2006).
From the article its clear that for students to develop skills they need togrow in a free and just society where they are able to develop their skills. In addtion the teachers should also be able to transform the content knowledge into forms that are pedagogical and adaptive to all kinds of students (Shulman 1992). Teachers need to evaluate their students by testing them to check for understanding ability or incase there are misunderstanding they check for areas of correction. In summary the article shows how critical pedagogy is and these include unlearning, learning, relearning and reflection and generally the impact they have on the student especially those from who have undergone traditional schooling (Martin 2007).
