Write an essay that demonstrates your ability to closely analyze and synthesize information from both the primary text and the secondary readings. The specific skills you must master in the essay include developing a thesis, supporting your argument by doing a close reading of passages and referencing the secondary sources and film. You will also conduct your own research on the topic you choose
Write a comparative analysis. Comparing the novel (Marielitos, Balseros and Other Exiles) to the movie Scarface (1983)
Three secondary sources must be used. One of the sources will be

The other 2 sources must be based in the US and found on your own. These may include books, chapters, academic journal articles, or other literary analyses of Cuban refugees. I would prefer if you can find maybe a new york newspaper article or an article from Florida. Something like this is what I mean, But I am open to other articles if it is easier for you
Developing a working thesis:
The paper has to do something with law and justice. When writing this paper, please relate it the topic of refugees, justifications for violating the law and human rights.
The thesis must answer these questions
– Making an argument that can be proved with evidence from the text and the secondary sources?
– Is your thesis debatable? Sometimes you can determine this if you can think of a possible counterargument?
– Is your thesis interesting and significant? By this, what is meant does your thesis add to the understanding of the subject? Does it pass the “so what” test?
-Is your thesis more than just a plot summary?
Page 1 – Introductory paragraph ( Please note that your thesis should go at the end of your introductory paragraph)
Page 2- Paragraph discussing term, concept, historical context of a law, political context, etc. ( this is where you will discuss refugees, justifications for violating the law and human rights)
Page 3- Keep discussing these terms and begin to review secondary sources
Page 4- This is where the persuasion begins, begin discussion of novel
Page 5 – Keep discussing novel
Page 6- Come to a close of the novel and start beginning film
Page 7 – Keep discussing film
Page 8 – Keep discussing film come to a close on the film
Page 9 – This is the page that synthesizes observations or interpretations of both the film and novel
Page 10- Concluding paragraphs restate thesis discuss the significance of your interpretation for thinking about the law and and Latin subjects/literature
