Nutrition Label Research Exercise
Due: Class #8 [Days: Tuesday, December 1, 2020; Eves: TBA 2020]
Assignment You are a community health nurse assigned to a patient who has a
significant other who usually shops for them but is currently unable to do
so. They are on a therapeutic diet related to their disease process. Your
assignment is to find five good choice items for their pantry and identify
five bad choice items. You will be given one of three very ordinary
therapeutic diets which you will research to find the most common
restrictions usually placed on these individuals, so you can make good
choices and identify bad choices for their dietary intake.
STEP ONE :
25 POINTS
Research your assigned therapeutic diet for restrictions and allowances
and describe them in a brief paragraph.
STEP TWO:
25 POINTS
Go shopping. This can be done from your own home with foods you have
on hand and/or at the grocery store. You must have a total of ten items,
five that are good choices and five poor choice items. These items should
not be anything specially marketed for that disease group. Make a list of
specific food items, along with brand names, if applicable.
For example: Green giant chicken stir fry (good or bad choice).
STEP THREE:
50 POINTS
None of these items have to be purchased, the information from the
Nutrition label is all that is needed. You then need to explain,
in paragraph form, why each item is either a good or bad choice for your
patient based on the label information. If some of the items you choose
do not come with a nutrition label use the reference index you must
research the nutritional information for that product. Be sure to reference
your research.
