Any topic (writer’s choice)

For this 4-5-page paper, you will compose a creative nonfiction essay about food. This assignment will also require you to produce a 1-page single-spaced analysis of your writing process and experience, where you will reflect carefully on the creative choices youve made for your primary paper. This essay is worth 35% of your grade, and will involve a peer review process.

PRIMARY ESSAY – WRITING PROMPTS

Write about the best or worst food experience youve ever had.
Write about a food that you hate, or a food that you love, and how this association was formed.
Write about a family member or friend and how they have shaped your tastes/distastes.
Write about a culinary tradition that has been formative to you in your life.
Compose a political/social/cultural argument/exploration of food. For example, think back to our excerpt from “Eating Animals.” You can compose a creative nonfiction essay about food ethics, food and the environment, food and immigration, food and race/ethnicity, and so forth. For this prompt, you should incorporate outside research and include a Works Cited page in MLA format.
1-PAGE SINGLE-SPACED ANALYSIS
For this portion of the assignment, you should examine, in detail, your own creative essay and discuss the reasoning behind your creative decisions. You can consider things like: your chosen narrative structure, use of language/word choice, imagery, use of physical space, syntax/sentence structure, choice of topic, what drew you to the topic, etc. Your analysis should reference the texts weve read so far in this course to discuss how they have shaped your creative decisions and/or conception of food.
