Remember the following:

You can’t insert something which changes the COURSE of the story. He cannot go back to Pencey. He cannot leave for Vermont half way through the novel. Afterwards? Maybe with some clear explanation.

It’s about 1950. No cell phones, computers, or jet planes.

There are very few televisions, and people had very few choices. Phones are rotary dial. people smoked indoors.

You must know your characters inside and out. Everything in his head and in his pockets you have created.
