Purpose: This assignment will introduce you to the ethical debate surrounding pornography. You will develop your skills in reading and analyzing scholarship, writing an argumentative, philosophical essay, and you will form or strengthen your position on this topic. You will enter a long-standing conversation about whether pornography is harmful. If nothing else, this assignment will ensure you are equipped to argue about the ethics of pornography on twitter.

Assignment

You will read the following articles (found in the Readings folder this week):

Altman, “The Right to Get Turned On: Pornography, Autonomy, Equality”
Brison, “‘The Price We Pay’? Pornography and Harm”
You will take a position on the ethics of pornography, exploring ONE main argument that supports your stance, and ONE main counterargument against it.

Altman and Brison can help you with your paper, but they should not write it for you. Go beyond regurgitation of the authors’ arguments. You may look outside these resources, but I can’t say that I recommend it for a 3-4 page paper – it’s likely more trouble than it’s worth.
