JOURNAL #1: COMPARE & CONTRAST “RUSH” & “SENNA”
To contrast something is to look for differences among two or more elements and to compare is to do the opposite, to look for similarities.
(WRITE ONE JOURNAL ON “RUSH” AND “SENNA”. DO NOT WRITE TWO JOURNAL ENTRIES.)
JOURNALS
Journaling is a great tool to learn cinema. By having a “conversation” with yourself about the films you see, you will learn what you like and what you don’t and why. Expressing yourself through the language of cinema is crucial. A filmmaker in any crew position is only as good as the thoughts they can express.
Please watch “Senna” in class and “Rush” outside of class, write, and submit a journal about the two films following the guidelines below.
JOURNAL GUIDELINES:
2 to 3 pages in length each. (@450 to 1000 words each)
Please clearly introduce each journal entry with the Film’s title
Should include your thoughts on the film’s subject, tone, style, music, and theme.
Should NOT be a synopsis.
Should address how the film was made – the cinematic construction of the films. How did the following help tell the story:
cameras
light
locations
wardrobe
camera style
color
music
editing rhythm/style
pathos
There is no “right” or “wrong” with the journaling. It should be a conversation with you. The idea is to look at film critically and express yourself through the language of cinema.
