INSTRUCTION:
– Your task in this unit is to immerse yourself in the period out of which this important story about a man selling his soul to the devil emerged. What is happening in the 16th and 17th centuries in terms of religion/theology, science, intellectual history, social change, etc.?
– Begin by going back to Kaufmanns introduction (the introduction on the textbook that I share the link) and use what he says about the background of the text as your jumping off point. By covering these two points:
      1. Main ideas of Martin Luthers theology. What is his view of mankind? of  Sin? of the devil?
      2. In the original Faustbuch (again, when and where?), what kind of a man is Dr. Faustus? What does he want? Whats the nature of his pact with the devil? What kinds of things does he do with his powers? Whats the overall tone of the work? How does it end?
