Explore how interviewers œset the scene for interviewee and begin interviews

Activity: Reflecting on Sample Interviews Estimated time: 90 minutes Introduction: The link below will take you to a set of qualitative interviews (on the subject of Friendship) conducted by a research group in Great Britain. The group conducted these interviews to serve as teaching examples. Your task is to watch a portion of each of the interviews, record notes as you watch, and submit a brief reflection on the material to the drop box below. The objectives of this activity: €¢ Introduction to QL interviewing €¢ Explore how interviewers œset the scene for interviewee and begin interviews €¢ Learn about informed consent and why it is important for interviewees to know the purpose of the research €¢ Consider factors that will make a QL interview go smoothly and yield rich, descriptive data Directions for whole activity: 1. Link to the page below where you will find links to FIVE interviews (Shazia, Alexander, Louise, Trevor, and Deborah). The page will open in a new pop-up page. 2. Follow the link to each of the five interviews. Each interview is divided into four sections. (You will see pictures with an > sign. Click the first box per interview to see the first few minutes of segment one) 3. Watch the first 5 minutes of each interview. Choose ONE interviewee and watch at least two segments of the interview for greater exposure to a QL interview-in-action. 4. As you watch the video, think about the question: œHow might a QL interview differ from a multiple-choice or likert-scale survey? Keep this question in mind, and record some notes/observations as you watch. You should particularly focus on what sorts of strategies does the interviewer need to try to help facilitate a good QL interview. (feel free to critique if you see areas that could be improved upon here) 5. Things to note: Note that the interviewer tells Trevor about the purposes of the interview and how the interview and the video will be used. Note that Deborah appears to be filling out an informed consent info sheet. (The link below will open in a new pop-up window. Close or diminish the browser when you are finished to return to this page. The interviews were recorded for teaching purposes. The camera angles were set up so the viewer/you could see both parties. In the actual interviews they would have been face-to-face with more eye contact that there might appear.) www.psychology.heacademy.ac.uk/Webdocs_not_nof/tqrmul/dataset/ Directions for drop box response: When finished, Please submit your response in the drop box to the following: Hopefully the sample interviews and the course readings/discussions have enabled you to see why a researcher 1) might choose to explore a topic via open-ended qualitative interviews and 2) the sorts of things that are important for researchers (and teachers) to keep in mind when conducting qualitative interviews. 1. From these interview samples (as well as your other readings/experiences), please identify at least 5 things that an interviewer should do to help facilitate a good qualitative interview (in which the respondant openly shares his/her thoughts)
