Read the University Art Museum case in Daft (pp. 81-84 or other pages in different editions of the Daft text).

a) Design a mission/vision statement and management structure for the museum.

b) In regard to the mission/vision statement, there are many different opinions among the faculty as to what the museum should be or should do.

c) How do you accommodate those conflicting expectations in a mission/vision statement? Identify those expectations and justify your decisions to include or exclude them from the mission/vision statement. There are also differing organizational cultures at play in this case: the faculty senate, the Art History Department, the graduate students in art history, the undergraduate students who also benefit from the museum’s offerings, etc.

d). Describe an organizational change process and how you would use this process to attempt to resolve the cultural differences in expectations, needs, and desires of art museum members and stakeholders (See the Daft chapter 11 and/or use library database searches). Make sure you document the change method you choose with appropriate scholarly references and citations.

e) Recommend a management structure for the museum that would address the need to accommodate widely varying expectations (you don’t need to allow for each group’s expectations, just need to describe some of the major differences in stakeholders organizational culture).

The paper should be about 10 pages (about 2,500 words) excluding the cover sheet, graphics & reference list. Be certain to cite all sources appropriately using APA formatting and style, and use the third person.

Use appropriate and credible source material and integrate applicable concepts from the textbooks and course material. The bulk of your research should be done using the UMUC databases.

Remember, I am looking for demonstration of your new expertise in application of management, leadership, and organizational design. In addition, the Writing Rubric will also be used in accessing your paper. A copy of this rubric can be found under the Course Content section of the class.

Make sure you make connections to class material, i.e., utilize concepts and models from the texts to frame your discussions such as:

1) Northouse chaps 11 on Team Leadership; chapter 14 on Culture and Leadership;

2) Daft chapter 2 Organizational Purpose and Structural Design; chapter 3; Daft chapter 10 on Organizational Culture and Ethical Values; chapter 11 on Innovation and Change (especially Organization Development Culture Change Interventions, p. 432-43 or other pages in different editions of the Daft text); and

3) Adler chapter 4 on Creating Cultural Synergy.

NOTE: The purpose of this paper is to apply the concepts you are learning in the course and from journals, and demonstrate both your understanding and application of organizational theory and behavior.

It is recommended that you utilize important concepts from the course to organize your presentation and provide a context for the exposition of your source material.
