In a layman’s language, a thesis statement is basically a statement of intent.  It is a proclamation of what you intend to achieve by writing the paper. You only get started with the writing once you have clearly established the point of reference of the paper, which in this case is the thesis statement. Otherwise, you will be writing a paper that lacks direction and focus.
