Society’s response to crime has changed over the past century. The approach of rehabilitation in the 1960s has gradually been replaced with a “get tough on crime” approach, bringing in mandatory sentencing laws and long prison sentences. Regardless of the approach, crime continues to be a problem, and recidivism for some crimes and some offenders remains high. In this assignment, you will explore society’s response to crime and different concepts of justice.

One of the areas in which literature experts often disagree is authorship: when a piece of writing is ”discovered” and the author is not known, these experts will attempt to discern if the work is by a writer and, if so, by whom. Such is the case with a short essay/letter to the editor titled ”Conflict of Laws.” One critic, Gary , claims that the author is Henry David Thoreau; another critic,  C. Johnson, claims it isn’t. Both critics refer to Thoreau’s ”Resistance to Civil Government” essay (pages 843-858 in your textbook) to support their claims. Your task is to decide which of these critics makes the more convincing argument and explain why you believe the one you choose. To do this, you will need to read the Thoreau essay for yourself, then read the two articles (attached here in . format). While this analysis, which should be at least 300 words, does not need to be in full APA format, it must include your name, have an interesting title, be in Times New Roman 12-point type and be double-spaced, and have proper APA citations and References list (you will have a minimum of three–the two articles and Thoreau’s essay).
