Essay Topic

Your task is to write on the titular story in Gabrielle Roy’s The Road Past Altamont and at least one of the other stories in the collection.

Choose one of the following:

1) Examine Roy’s use of a double persepctive, that is, the ways in which the adult Christine reflects on her younger self; and the young Christine’s lived experiences.

Do not consult outside sources, or use them in your paper. This is not a research effort; I do not expect you to scour the libraries looking for critical essays on these authors!

Length: 6 pages / 1800 words maximum. Using a 12 point font, double-spaced, you should get about 300 words per page (save for the first, because of the opening titles). Anything over six pages will not be regarded. The essay has no minimum length, but be careful: your ideas must be fully explicated. Why all this? Part of any essay is the exercise of self-editing. Parameters force you to be judicious. 1800 ≠ 2000. 1800 ≠ 3000. Aim for concision.
