World War I history and literature

As the essay grade grid and essay discussion in the syllabus and folders indicate, the essay is graded differently than the weekly writing assignments.  It must meet the higher standard of organization and analysis that are necessary for a formal essay.  So be sure to make use of the essay discussion forum and the online tutors to ensure you are on the right track.

It is important that you think of the essay NOT as separate from but as the culmination of your other work for the course.  The reading, writing, and discussion are all a form of pre-writing for the essay. The essay should be approximately 8-10 pages long. Choose a topic from the class literature assignments, establishing a clear and substantive thesis (main idea) and then developing that thesis by drawing from the literature, class lectures, discussion, history reading assignments, and any additional outside research you may want to use. You must quote from the assigned texts, use in-text citations, and include a Works Cited page. Pay special attention to the sample student paper, which is shorter than the one you will write but which gives you an example of how to use and document quotations.

You must use the MLA documentation method (Nursing students can use APA in this class).  (see the OC libRary webpage for further information about MLA citation forms.)    If you do use any outside (including Internet) sources for this essay, be sure to document them carefully and thoroughly according to MLA guidelines.  Do NOT use Google or Wikipedia.  Instead, go to the OC library website and see book information (including references books) under FINDING BOOKS and  see articles, especially in Proquest and Britannia under . . . in FINDING ARTICLES.  [Britannia is an especially good resource.  Click on Finding Articles and then on the “A-B” tab at the top of the page] If you want some assistance in arranging your ideas, free tutors are available in the Writing Center ( HSS 312).  Online tutoring begins the second week of the quarter. Watch the CANVAS log in page for more information.

NOTE:  You must use MLA documentation in your weekly responses as well.  We will begin to work on this in Week Two.

-Book read during class are: Johnny Got His Gun (Dalton Trumbo), All Quiet on the Western Front (Erich Maria Remarque), Goodbye to all that (Robert Graves), Mary Borden (The forbidden zone)
