Topic: The practice of free speech as defined by the Constitution has been exploited by certain segments of the population, particularly the pornography industry and those groups who engage in hate speech. Even in the face of this, we should not develop a more narrow definition of political speech.

Will need the following requirements:

  1. The quality/credibility of your research ** 3 sources listed on the outline as well as 3 incorporated into the speech
  1. The effectiveness of your argumentation,  i. e., The logic of your critical thinking and the linkages and connections you make with the material you present and the purpose of your speech.
  1. The scope of material you choose to provide. Students often wrestle with scope, with the process between choosing how much and what type of material they will use. The 3 choices for scope are: (can be any of the following)
  1. A global/broad perspective : you give a broad view of the topic, providing highlights and generalizations that work across the board without going into details or exceptions. For example, you see the revolutionary war as part of the larger scheme of conquest, settlement and inevitable rebellion that has played out repeatedly throughout history.
  1. A case study perspective: you look at a single situation that has occurred and give an in depth analysis of the common and unique characteristics and activity. In this you do not have to make the claim that this is what happens in all situations or even most of the time. It is however, what happened here in this particular case. The benefit this approach makes is that you gain an intimate understanding of a single situation. For example, your broad topic of airline accidents may focus on the crash of American Airlines flight 587 on Nov 12, 2001. The details of the crash and the investigation reveal the details of the process of monitoring and investigating airline safety and how we deal with crashes.

c.       Narrow/focused perspective: This approach looks at more than a single event or case but does not try to explain the entire industry or all the wars. Picking and choosing various aspects of the situation, often from multiple cases you decide what is emphasized from a variety of choices. You seek an understanding that identifies common ground across various places/situations. For example on a topic of the difficulties and hurdles of constructing nuclear power plants in the US you will look at 2 examples of local opposition to a power plant in their area, 3 times when federal bureaucracy inhibited, delayed or scrapped construction of a new plant and 2 situations where soaring insurance costs that makes it harder for electric companies to make a profit on their investment.

A general rule of thumb for scope is that you must choose one of these – especially in a 6 minute speech. You cannot mix and match; it is too unwieldy and confusing.

  • Must have an outline to go along with the speech **
