In the book, Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell tells a story of people who are considered extremely successful. The story of success is more than individual ambition, intelligence and drive. The concept of success is very complex and we often have to look at a person’s family, birthplace, ethnic and cultural background and socioeconomic class. For Malcolm Gladwell, the story of success is a combination of multiple factors

Sociologist C. Wright Mills indicated, “Neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both.” There are complicated dynamics involved in measures of success.

Answer these two questions:

1. What is the most important concept you learned in reading Outliers? Please explain and give examples.

2. What is the significance of success when relating it to Sociology of Writing? How does this apply to your own life?
