This assignment will help you think at a higher level, analyze, evaluate, and connect your topic by using one of the three heuristic organizational styles studied in Modules 9 -11.
Complete a 2-3 page heuristic essay on a topic of your choice, using process analysis, cause and effect, or compare and contrast to organize your essay. Remember to strive for higher order thinking.
Any topic is acceptable; the goal is to inform your readers using a Heuristic organizational pattern (compare/contrast, cause and effect, or process-analysis). Make sure your thesis identifies what heuristic style you will you will be using.
Example: Understanding the causes of child abuse can help prevent the devastating effects.
Sources are not required, but if you use them, they should be cited in correct MLA format. Failure to cite information properly is plagiarism and is not acceptable. At the end of this week, have someone you trust peer edit your rough draft before submitting your final draft. (Check with your Tutoring or Writing Center.)
Essay Guidelines
All essays must be done in MLA format.
Go to the following website: http://somerset.kctcs.libguides.com/mla and scroll down to the section “Overview of MLA Format” to see the requirements of font, spacing, margins, etc.
Essay needs to be 2-3 full pages. This means to the very bottom of the second page as a minimum.
Organization
In addition, your research essay should be organized in the following manner using the standard academic formula for writing college essays.

Have an attention grabber that engages the reader’s attention
Clearly state your thesis and the points you will be covering. Consider a 3-prong thesis.
BODY: SAY IT
Develop the points of your thesis in order and use transition to smoothly go from one point to another. Make sure your paragraphs are all organized by subject and that every sentence in your paragraph belongs under this subject umbrella. In addition, make sure every paragraph belongs in your essay.
