It would not be an exaggeration to say that Spike Lee’s ear is as keen as his eye. Discuss the ensemble of diegetic and/or non-diegetic sound in Do the Right Thing, or Malcolm X. Outline a theory (that is, a logic) of sound in Lee’s works. In other words, what sound strategies or aesthetics does Lee seem partial to?

In the highly acclaimed 1989 film, Do The Right Thing, director/actor/writer Spike Lee, succeeds in capturing the growing tensions and sweltering hatred that existed between the white male local police officers and the predominantly black residents on a small block cominity in Brooklyn. and eventually errupted in the anticipated violence emphasize the scene and dialogue.

Through various intensional uses of music and sound in Do The Right Thing, Spike Lee is able to support and cue to specify significant themes that exist in the film.

Spike lee uses sound to impart wisdom and meaning in his film.

the extent of its use and the fashion in which it serves different purposes and, at the same time and paradoxically enough, juxtaposing and complementing with the film’s score becomes quite impressive.
