How might a power- and privilege-oriented framework inform interpretation of social work research?
How might increased cultural competence influence the outcome of social work research?
Imagine looking at a painting by abstract artist Mark Rothko and considering the use of colors and shapes to form a rectangular dark mass filling the center of a canvas. Consider how your reaction to such an image might change with the knowledge that Rothko painted it in his later years, during a period of severe depression that culminated in his suicide.
Approaching social work research as a neutral set of observations is similar to looking at an abstract painting with no knowledge of the context that surrounded its creation. A framework informed by cultural competence and knowledge of power and privilege contexts can help social workers to better understand the realities of the situation they are witnessing. Such a framework can also help them to develop more suitable means for addressing issues that arise.
For this Assignment, you examine a piece of research in terms of power and privilege dynamics. You also explore potential influences of increased cultural competence on outcomes associated with the research. In a 10- to 12-page paper, address the following:
•Review the Fenge (2010) article.
•Review this week’s Learning Resources.
•Describe elements of the research from a theoretical framework informed by power and privilege dynamics.
•Explain how increased levels of cultural competence might have influenced outcomes associated. Please use resources give and at least 4 references. I will attach last weeks paper so we can follow the same format throughout the entire course.
