Cause and Effect Essay #4
#1. Choose a topic and write a 4-5 page causal analysis. Your paper should be persuasive in nature and thesis driven. You will need 4 sources and a MLA works cited page. Your class notes and textbook should serve as your guide. Review the two causal essays read in class.
Next, choose a structure for your essay. Your analysis pattern should be clear as I outlined on the board. For example, your body paragraphs might explore 3 causes and a single effect, or you might choose to present your argument as a causal chain where an effect becomes a cause.
#2. State the exigence (the problem that needs solving/the reason for the discussion or debate). Open with a hook to generate interest, and provide any background information on the subject matter that might help your reader understand the relevance and importance of the subject matter. Lastly, state your thesis toward the end of your introduction.
#3. Throughout the body of your essay, include transitions for cause and effect as you develop your argument. Bold these transitions throughout your essay. For a list of cause and effect transitions, see the glossary of your textbook.
#4. A note about point of view: Do not write in the 2nd (you and your) or 1st person (I, we, our, us).
