Assessment Criteria Essay
This essay will be a substantial study of a central concept, or ensemble of concepts, that we will have explored
in the lectures and tutorials. It is designed to give students the opportunity to research a topic that interests them, and to develop a
coherent thesis that takes into account the set reading forthe lectures and tutorials, further reading, and independent research undertaken
by the student. Students will be assessed on how well these criteria are met, and the degree ofinitiative shown in their conceptualisation
and articulation ofa rigorous, convincing argument that makes efficient use of secondary sources, but at the same time proffers the
student’s own thinking on the topic. Higher results will be dependent upon the degree to which students display independent research,
reading and thinking on the topic.
NB: Wikipedia will not be accepted as a reference source in the preparation of essays. Which is not to
say you can’t use it get ideas about where to take your research next – it’s just not an acceptable ‘final word’ on a topic.
