Research papers must contain 5-6 double-spaced typewritten (in New Times Roman, 12 font, 1 inch margins) body pages. This does not include the Works Cited page. The left and right margins should be one inch (1?).  The top and bottom margins are also one inch (1?);  You will not need a separate title page; put your name, the date, etc. at the top of the first page as seen in the MLA example in the textbook.  Don’t forget the running head with your last name and the page number in the upper right corner of each page. You will need to back up each claim you make within the argument. You will use your sources to build credibility and gain authority to speak as a writer on a particular topic. Your aim is to persuade your audience, thus you must use credible sources to back up everything you say. You can use ethical, emotional or logical appeals. You’ll want to avoid logical fallacies within the argument. You will use both direct quotes, paraphrases and will cite all your sources correctly in the text as well as prepare a Works Cited page to accompany the essay.

This is a research paper. The Works Cited page must be adequate and in correct MLA format. The Works Cited page must contain at least five works, two must be scholarly peer reviewed sources and no more than two can be internet sources (see the guidelines from the annotated bibliography assignment for more details on sources.)
Be sure to look at A Writer’s Reference page 454 to see what a Works Cited page looks like when complete.  Note a couple of important general details: all of the page is double-spaced, within and between entries; every line after the first of an entry is indented; the entries have periods at the end; the words – Works Cited- are centered at the topic of the page (not bolded, underlined or in all capital letters; and the entries are in alphabetical order by author’s last name.
Content and Style:
A research paper is not a string of quotations. It is a logically developed and clearly expressed composition which incorporates supporting documentation. Papers should be adequate in length and in development of ideas. The paragraphs should be unified and coherent. Transitions and parallel structure link ideas/statements together.
A research paper is a formal piece of writing; use no contractions or slang. Even though the paper is written only in third person (no first person, “I,” and no second person, “you”), the style in the paper should be your own. The vocabulary should be appropriate to the subject; avoid jargon and words that may be known only to a special group. Assume that the reader knows very little, if anything, about your topic. Make certain you know the meaning of all words used in the term paper.
Mechanics:
Papers should contain no major errors (comma splices, sentence fragments, fused sentences, faulty parallelism, mixed constructions, dangling or misplaced modifiers, faulty subject/verb agreement, faulty pronoun/antecedent agreement). Proofread carefully to eliminate spelling, punctuation, syntax, and grammar errors.
