Topic: Research Paper
And now we have arrived at the dreaded research paper. What could be worse? Well, what if I told you you were going to be writing about Peter Singer again? Singer has been named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. But has his influence been for good or bad? That is the question you will be answering for this paper. I want an argumentative essay which evaluates Singer’s career as a whole. Your thesis statement will be some version of “Overall, Peter Singer’s writing helps/harms humanity because…†As stressed with Paper 1, that because is all-important: in an argumentative essay, you must always be sure to support your assertions with reasons. (Remember the term logos?) What makes this assignment tricky is that I am asking you to evaluate Singer’s writings as a whole, and I am sorry to be the one to tell you that “The Singer Solution to World Poverty†is not the only thing he has written. He is known for having strong opinions on a wide range of topics, and you should consider the entire sweep of his career as you are constructing your thesis statement. One of the things I will be looking for is that you discuss Singer’s position on the various issues he has been prominently associated with during his career, the things he is known for. So what is Peter Singer known for? Hey, that’s why they call it a research paper. Your paper should have at least 5 sources. You should have at least 1 source written by Singer (NOT including “The Singer Solution to World Povertyâ€Â; you can use the “Singer Solution†as one of your other 5 if you want, but I want at least 1 ADDITIONAL piece by Singer), and at least 1 source written about Singer by another writer. At least 1 source must be a print source, and at least 1 must be located online. You must quote from your sources using proper MLA format, and include a Works Cited page.
