Hamlet is filled with Shakespeare’s elaborate play on “seeming,” i.e. how things seem to be and what is the reality behind the complex screen of appearances. Hamlet himself is the great dissembler, along with Claudius. “Seeming” is at issue in Hamlet’s relationships with Ophelia, with Rosenkranz and Guildenstern, even with his own mother, Gertrude: What is appearance and what is reality in these relationships? The one exception is Laertes. How, in his case, are the appearances completely ruptured at the end?
