Week 7 Assignment: Design Methods of Family-Centered Communication Activity Description Early childhood educators who enjoy their work genuinely enjoy relating to and communicating with children and their parents. Educators can help families understand and support their program by communicating and sharing information with them. Furthermore, if some of the families in your program have special communication needs, if they are non-English speaking, or if literacy is a problem, then you will need to make a special effort to ensure that you communicate with them in ways that are meaningful, sensitive, and respectful. For this assignment, you have read Chapters 7, 8, and 11 in your textbook and reflected on communicating with families. The answer to the question posed in this week’s introduction is ‘d’. Caregivers and families find a Daily Log helpful by documenting child activities during the day, while at the same time enhancing the communication between the center and the family. Consider what you have learned about family communication. Interview the director of a childcare center, preferably accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), or the principal of an early childhood school. Ask about the methods the center/school uses for family-centered communication. If the center/school serves families of different cultures, ask how the center/school communicates with non-English speaking families. Write a paper that summarizes and supports your interview findings. Include the following in your paper: • Reflect on the importance of communication between caregivers/schools and families. • Reflect on formats that you have used to keep communication flowing between the teacher and home. • Appraise the benefits of various types of communication for families. • Be sure to include communication strategies such as the daily log, portfolios, events (celebration), and technology. • Support your findings with research. Support your paper with three scholarly references from peer-reviewed journals published in the past 7 years. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included. Length: 5-7 pages
