1. Read several hymns (prayers) from the Rig-Veda, devoted to particular Vedic gods (e.g., Indra, Rudra, Soma, Agni). In your own words, try to interpret the meaning of those hymns. 2. After reading an excerpt from the Laws of Manu (Anthology, pp. 38-42), explain in your own words the essential features of the Four Stages of Life in Hindu tradition. What (ideally) is a twice-born person supposed to focus on during each stage, i.e., what should be his goals at each period of life? Why, according to Hindus, a solitary existence has a special spiritual value?
3. Read closely an excerpt from Chandogya Upanishad (Anthology, pp. 34-35). Summarize in your own words what is the main subject matter discussed in this passage? How do you understand the main message that Svetaketu is supposed to learn from this dialogue?
