Write a 4 pg (plus a works cited page) double-spaced typed rhetorical analysis of the topic. Identify the author’s rhetorical objective and argue if you believe his overall claim and his use of evidence validates and proves his objective. Focus on the essay with a thesis statement that conveys a debatable claim and supporting reasons. The rhetorical analysis should identify the author’s main claim and at least five passages in the letter where the author uses the rhetorical appeals to substantiate his claim. Describe the key argumentative strategy King uses in his published letter. Based on your analyses, do you believe his arguments are credible and convincing? Why or why not? You must take a stand and argue if you believe the author supports his main claim effectively with the evidence he uses to support his arguments. Clearly identify the types of ethos, pathos, and ethos the writer uses as evidence. Are they effective? Are there any persuasive fallacies (such as generalizations, false assumptions, ad hominem, bandwagon appeals, “if this, then that” appeals, slanting, or other fallacies that Epstein exemplifies in PGCT?) If there are, clearly identify these fallacies and argue if they are detrimental to his arguments or if they support his arguments. You are required to cite a minimum of six (6) times to the evidence (arguments/claims, rhetorical appeals, figurative language) used in the “The Letter” using in-text parenthetical citations to support your own claim and arguments.
Conclude your essay with a strong conclusion that summarizes your key arguments, affirms your thesis, and provides an effective conclusion statement. Be certain that you include a Works Cited page for your primary and secondary courses (if you use secondary critical sources).

Dr. King’s letter was in response to a previously published letter signed by eight Birmingham clergy (see attached link to “Alabama Clergy Letter” PDF file). *Read this file before you read Dr King’s letter that can be accessed here: http://www.massresistance.org/docs/gen/09a/mlk_day/statement.html
