ESSAYS These weekly assignments will be all research based papers. Only use 3 pages in conducting these assignments. All these essays are due by the following Sunday. So if the assignment starts on that Monday then the essay is due on that Sunday by 12:00 a.m. I will title all the essays. Sources must be no older than 2-3 years old.
Essay 1. Week 2 (Due March 15th ) Arguments made about the economic benefits the development that will affect the local community justify the financing of many sport facilities. During a time of global recession when there is a proven logic for governments to spend their way out of financial trouble, the expenditure on sports facilities and supporting infrastructure can be considered a financial lifeline contributing to bringing the economy out of recession rather than an expensive luxury. Directions:
1. Given the claimed benefits of investing in sports facilities, find an economic impact analysis or report for a sport facility. (Do not use the ones provided in Module Resources, but those can be used as examples.) 2. Analyze what it is meant by economic impact and what benefits it brings in terms of construction, employment, supply chains, local income, and new events. 3. In addition, explain how to ensure a transparent audit trail of how the economic impact has been derived and what its key drivers are.
Essay 2. Week 4 (Due March 29th) Directions: Obtain the published accounts or financial statements of a sport facility business. It could be a stadium, arena, municipal swimming pool, or a local community club, but may not be from the sport facility you have chosen for your project. Provide a summary of the financial information presented in these documents. Then, based on your understanding of accounting and finance, use these financial statements to explain the present financial situation of this facility. Also, project the trend of financial success or failure you believe the sport facility will have in the next five years. Defend your answers.
Essay 3. Week 6 (Due by April 12th) Directions: One of the biggest issues in setting objectives for events to be held in a sport facility are those that may be beneficial socially or financially but are contrary to the mission of the sport facility. These may include events that may be politically, culturally, or socially motivated and may cause questions in the community. As a sport facility manager, choose a potentially controversial event that might be held at your sport facility. What questions would probably be asked of you by (a) the facility ownership and (b) the community? How would you answer those questions and explain the justification for this event?
Essay 4. Week 8 (Due by April 26th) Directions: Review the following concepts in your text, in this module, and through outside research, and compile an essay on benchmarking and performance management of sport facilities. Answer the following in your essay: 1. In evaluating various performance management frameworks is there such a thing as too much evidence for a manager of a sports facility when trying to benchmark facility performance? If so, how can the manager decide which performance indicators are the most relevant? 2. Is self-assessment an appropriate mechanism for measuring performance? Discuss the merits of this against assessment by an independent, external assessor. 3. How do performance dimensions and benchmarking processes differ for a public sector facility manager, a commercial facility manager, and the manager of a charitable facility?
Discussions The weekly discussions are due by Thursday 12:00 a.m. of that week. Please on you two pages only. Week 2 1. Research and present a new technology or methodology specifically being used in a sport facility to make that facility more environmentally friendly and sustainable. 2. Explain how you would prioritize the space allocation of a Division II college athletic facility that houses a physical education department, a college athletic program, a campus recreation program, and a summer camps department. • Be sure to properly cite any sources and use APA format. Week 3 1. Explain why volunteers are an integral part of human resource management in sport facilities. Why do people volunteer? What is the need for volunteers? What is the economic significance of volunteers? Give an example of a sporting event that you attended when employees were used and explain why and how they assisted the facility. 2. Explain why employees are often looked at as assets to a sport facility much like they think of equipment and infrastructure. Considering that employees are human beings and not inanimate objects, do you believe that human resources should simply be looked at as another asset for a sport facility? Why or why not? • Be sure to properly cite any sources and use APA format. Week 4 1. Regardless of the sport business, the number one goal is to make a profit. How can this be true for a non-profit sport facility? 2. Think about what you would do if you were the manager of a municipal recreation facility and you were responsible for attending the monthly budget meetings held by the mayor of your town. What would you do if you discovered the town was over-budget? Imagine if the mayor was asking that all departments, including your facility, cut twenty percent from their remaining budget. How would you go about trimming the budget when you may already have staff hired, allocated for programs, have customers registered for these programs, and signed event contracts for officials and/or staff ? • Be sure to properly cite any sources and use APA format. Week 5 1. When it comes to facility services including security, concessions, parking, and custodial/housekeeping, there is a choice to keep these services in-house or to outsource those services to an outside party. What are the pros and cons of keeping each of these services in-house versus outsourcing for these services for a 20,000 seat multipurpose arena? 2. Discuss in detail the answer to the following: “How much legal expertise is enough for a sport facility manager or owner?”• Be sure to properly cite any sources and use APA format.
