Scenario Two: The Substance-Abusing Boss A highly-skilled technical manager at Biomedical Company, Bill, who has been with the organization for fifteen years, has recently been through a difficult time. Bill’s wife of twenty-two years divorced him and his nineteen year old daughter is pregnant, dropped out of college and moved home with him. He had a huge financial settlement with his, now, ex-wife. To make ends meet he asked an employee at Biomedical Company to rent a room from him. It did not work out well, as Bill spent the majority of his time drinking heavily, asking his employee to go to the store to purchase alcohol for him and finally ending up in the hospital after a serious fall. Bill was in the hospital for six weeks, while the details of his hospitalization are not known at Biomedical Company, Bill clearly has issues with drinking. Rumors are that he’s been treated for depression and is currently on medication. To compound this further, the assistant manager of Bill’s department at Biomedical Company, Joe, has been issuing orders, changing the department’s priorities and behaving nastily to the administrative assistants. The team of skilled technicians at Biomedical Company are angry at the situation, the assistant manager and Bill. Work is not getting done and the departments that depend on Bill’s department are becoming, appropriately, angry. The situation was brought to you by the Director of Biomedical Company’s Human Resources department. They want to understand the dynamics of the team and see what can be salvaged. They asked you to meet with each member of the department and Bill. When you met with Bill he seemed to under the influence of some substance.
