Career in Nonprofit: The Importance of Postgraduate Education

I believe that there are different skills necessary in order for a nonprofit professional to succeed in his or her field. However, more than the skills, a person must not only have a strong foundation of the nonprofit profession but should also have a strong root on all the aspects in this field. Therefore, I believe that pursuing my MA in Nonprofit Management is important in order to supplement my learning during undergraduate studies.

As I have said, my undergraduate learning will help me to take part in the nonprofit community. With undergraduate courses, I was able to acquire certain information and skills which I think are necessary foundations for a nonprofit profession. Specifically, my professional goal is to be able to participate in carrying out nonprofit activities and aids towards the protection of the environment. Since I was young, I have always been fascinated with nature, and as an adult, my awareness of the detrimental occurrences in the environment increased my concern for the environment. This knowledge made me realize that I am capable of paving my career path to be part of nonprofit organizations that are inclined on environmental protection and awareness. I have strong stand that with my business and managerial background, I will be able to aid in the development of proposals that can be given to businesses that are negatively affecting the environment. Moreover, my knowledge and background on accounting and finance will also allow me to offer my help in financial planning of the organization, along with understanding the political and social structure of the industry.

Aside from this, nonprofit organizations usually work within or for the community. As my goal is to be part of nonprofit environmental organizations, it is essential that a nonprofit professional must have the skill to coordinate with different people. Hence, my willingness to take part and immerse into communities and groups is another key that I consider as an advantage. I believe that the key to achieving goals, may it be in for-profit or nonprofit organizations, is the proficient and effective communication among all the involved parties. Nonetheless, I admit that I still have to learn the communication process and structure followed by nonprofit organizations.

In addition, it must also be highlighted that nonprofit entities represent a combination of profit and nonprofit activities. One should be prepared, especially when the person comes from a for-profit enterprise, regarding the working hours, monetary compensation, benefits, and the like. For me, these aspects are also important to consider because for-profit and nonprofit organizations have different structures in these organization areas. Thus, a strong understanding on these aspects must be established in order to avoid conflicts and misunderstandings.

In conclusion, it is important for me, a person who wants to be part of a future nonprofit community, to have a strong grasp on the methods of these organizations. In addition, certain methods must be learned in order to achieve success in delivering positive results towards the stakeholders. Certain skills, as I may already possess some, must still be polished, learned, and understood in a nonprofit perspective. I consider this important because I know that acquiring this degree will mold me into a competitive individual. With this said, I believe that my technical skills, theoretical learning, and hands-on experiences are the key to succeeding in my new educational endeavor.
