Course Description from Catalog
A critical and interdisciplinary analysis of contemporary African American communities. Issues in economic status, education, health, justice, politics, race relations, and media representation examined from the perspectives of anthropology, history, sociology, ethnic and gender studies.
Course Objectives
Moving comparatively through 20th and 21st century black social and labor movements, this course examines the ideological and philosophical divides between black cultures and American history. We will follow the multifaceted African American experience in four discreet areas. One will follow the African American debate in the post Plessy era until 1939. The second will follow the African American experience in both World Wars and into the Korean and Vietnamese conflicts. The third follows that experience in the Civil Rights era from 1948 until 1970. The course will conclude by following the African experience in North America into the contemporary era.
