I believe the most significant incident that perpetuated the Cold War was Reagan’s Star Wars program. In his desire to assert America’s power, he increased military spending to develop the Strategic Defense Initiative which was an anti-ballistic missile system using nuclear x-ray lasers to intercept and destroy enemy missiles. This sent a message to the Soviet Union that the U.S. may be preparing for a missile attack. It increased tension also because it was feared the Soviet Union may retaliate over U.S. violations of the Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty since arms controls was a primary factor. This led to the Soviet Union building up their military defense so they did not fall behind the U.S., but they did not have the money to do it, which contributed to their collapse.
